Frank Bud Mason, Jr., age 90, of Andover,OH, died Monday, November 14, 2016, at the Andover Village Retirement Community. He was born June 11, 1926, in Andover, a son of Frank B. Mason, Sr. and Hazel May (Thompson) Mason. He was a 1944 graduate of Andover High School and entered the U.S. Army in September of 1944. Frank served in World War II in the 44th Infantry in southern France and Germany. His 44th Division was one of several Army units that returned to the United States at the end of conflict in Europe. They were to be part of the assault force on Japan after a mandated 30 day furlough; and the atom bomb was dropped ending the war. For his service in Europe, he received two Battle Stars and the Combat Infantry Badge. Frank remained in the service until 1946 when he then returned to the Andover area and married Jane E. (French) Mason on December 24, 1947. Frank was employed for 5 years with Ohio Edison and another 5 years with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers as a construction lineman. He eventually went into civil service and became Postmaster in Andover for 28 years from 1958 until he retired in 1985. Frank was then elected to the Andover Township Board of Trustees in 1993. Frank was active in the Pymatuning Valley Athletic Boosters, and while President of the Boosters in 1978 to 1979 they purchased four football field light poles, which had to be brought in by helicopter. He facilitated the funds being raised by the PV Boosters Club and Board of Education. Frank also served on the Andover Union Cemetery Association's Board; and was a member of the Andover Commons Restoration Committee, which produced a new Veteran's Memorial on the public square. Frank was honored for 60 years of service to the American Legion Post #226 having been a member since the late 1940's. He earned the honor for his time of service to the Legion and also to the Andover community. His hobbies included hunting, trapping, golfing, and playing Poker. He was a sports enthusiast and had played for the Andover AC Baseball team; and managed the Little League's Red Sox team. Frank is survived by his wife of 69 years, Jane E. Mason, of Andover; five sons, Chris (Patty) Mason of Andover, Kim Mason of Andover, Terry (Ruby) Mason of Andover, Seth (Shelley) Mason of Eastlake,OH, and Nate (Sharon) Mason of Andover; 12 Grandchildren; 8 Great Grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; a son, Greg Mason in 2011; two brothers, Neal Mason and Harry Mason; and a sister, Ada Nojonen. A funeral service will be held on Friday, November 18, 2016, at 1:00 PM at Baumgardner Funeral & Cremation Service, 134 Prospect St., Andover, OH. Calling hours will be on Friday from 12:00 Noon until the time of service. Cremation will follow and cremated remains will be buried in Maple Grove Cemetery at a later date.
