Gene R. Draa

Gene R. Draa, age 78, of Vernon township, OH, died Wednesday, April 20, 2016, at Meadowbrook Manor in Hartford. He was born December 23, 1937, in Gustavus, OH, a son of Lawrence and Ruth (Deakins) Draa. A lifetime area resident, Gene was a 1955 graduate of Vernon School. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Business from Youngstown State University; and he served in the U.S. Navy from 1955 to 1959. He was employed as an accountant for Packard Electric for thirty years. He enjoyed working on the family strawberry farm, gardening, and making homemade wine. He also enjoyed fast pitch softball which is where he first met his wife, Mona. Over the years Gene was instrumental in teaching many boys and girls how to pitch baseball and softball; and he coached several little league teams. He also had a love of animals, especially dogs and cats. Gene is survived by his wife, Mona E. (Jones) Draa, whom he married August 24, 1963, of Vernon; his son, Mark (Connie) Draa of Dalton, OH; his four grandchildren, Jacob (Carrie), Joshua, Kaitlyn, and Emily; and his sister-in-law, Margaret Grace Draa of Vernon. He is preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Dale Draa who passed away March 24, 2016. A funeral service will be held on Monday, April 25, 2016, at 11:00 AM at the Kinsman Presbyterian Church, 6383 Church St.,Kinsman,OH, with Rev. Susan Francis officiating. Burial will follow in Westview Cemetery in Vernon, OH. Calling hours will be on Sunday, April 24 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Baumgardner Funeral & Cremation Service, 8569 Main St., Kinsman,OH.
