John B. Place, 81 years old, of Gustavus, Ohio, died on Saturday, October 2, 2004, at Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren, Ohio. John was born on August 18, 1923, in Smith Township, Ohio, to the late John E. Place and the late Emma P. (Hatch) Place. A lifelong resident of Gustavus, Mr. Place was a 1943 graduate of Gustavus High School. He served in the United States Navy during World War II in the Philippines. Mr. Place worked as a Millwright for Packard Electric of Warren for 37 years, retiring in 1981. He was member of the Gustavus Federated Church, served as past Commander of the Gustavus Burdette Edgar Totten VFW Post #6263, and as past Master of the Gustavus Masonic Lodge #442. Mr. Place enjoyed spending time with his family, repairing things, gardening, and doing handwork. He married Ruth E. "Betty" Henceroth on September 21, 1946. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, William E. Place; and his sister, Margaret J. Barry. He is survived by his wife, Ruth E. "Betty" Place of Gustavus, OH; his daughter, Patricia A. (Ronald) Kalas of Gustavus, OH; his son, J. Michael (Mary) Place of Gustavus, OH; his son, David J. (Debbie) Place of Salem, OH; his granddaughter, Sheri Knepel, M.D.; his grandson, Ryan Kalas, Ph.D.; his granddaughter, Aimee Crabtree; his granddaughter, Elizabeth Evans; his granddaughter, Marie Place; his granddaughter, Jennifer Place; his granddaughter, Kellie Place; and his grandson, Andy Place. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 6, 2004, at Noon (12p.m.) at Baumgardner Funeral Home, 8569 Main Street, Kinsman, Ohio, with the Rev. Steven W. Trimble officiating. Calling hours will be on Wednesday from 11:00a.m. until the time of services. Memorial contributions may be made to the church at 8850 State Rt. 193, Farmdale, Ohio 44417.
