Maxine J. Houser, 82 years old, of Gustavus, died Thursday, March 11, 2004, at her home. Maxine was born on August 1, 1921, in Gustavus, Ohio, to the late Lowell White and the late Loma (Jewell) White. A lifelong Gustavus resident, Mrs. Houser graduated from Gustavus High School in 1939. She was employed by Gustavus Elementary School for 30 years, serving as head cook for many years. She also worked for her mother-in-law at Houser's Drive In Bakery in Youngstown; and she was a partner with her husband in operating their dairy and grain farm. Mrs. Houser was a member of the Gustavus Federated Church; was an officer and a leader in the VFW Ladies Auxillary Post #6263, the Ladies Aid in Gustavus, and the Mother's Club. For 25 years she was the community chairperson for the American Cancer Society. She was very community oriented and loved to bake. Mrs. Houser married Virgil R. Houser, Sr., on September 6, 1939. He died on January 15, 2004. Also preceding her in death are her parents; a grandson, Jeffrey R. Hartman; a great grandson, Derik Overly, Jr.; a son-in-law, Philip J. Engler; and a brother, Robert V. White. She is survived by her daughter, Gloria H. Engler of Leavittsburg, OH; her son, Garry R. (Pat) Houser of Gustavus, OH; her daughter, Janice L. Houser of Cortland, OH; Twin son, Dennis R. Houser of Gustavus and Twin daughter, Darlene K. (Robert) Swick of Johnston, OH; her son, Virgil R. (Janet) Houser, Jr. of Gustavus, OH; her sister, Genevieve Hyde of Kinsman, OH; fourteen Grandchildren and eighteen Great Grandchildren. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 16, 2004, at 11:00a.m. at Baumgardner Funeral Home, 8569 Main St., Kinsman, Ohio, with the Reverend Steven W. Trimble officiating. Burial will follow in Gustavus Cemetery. Calling hours will be on Monday, March 15, 2004, from 6p.m. to 8p.m. at the funeral home.
